Understanding the term "sick puppy"

Reasons why Calvin and I are very similar:
1) We have both proven difficult to housebreak (thanks Mom...I'm doing pretty well now)
2) We are both adorabe beyond all reason (thanks Newf...so true)
3) We both have sensitive stomachs. For Calvin, this relates back to number one. Not for me though, I want it to be very clear that I've mastered the bathroom thing...

This morning we returned to the vet after more than a month with no change to his tummy troubles. The poor guy has to go every hour and is not digesting his food very well (sorry to Kimberly, whose floor he pooped on yesterday). We had him thoroughly de-wormed just in case and switched him over to a hypoallergenic brand of food. Two weeks of getting worse finally turned good when he seemed better than ever for three days. I rushed to The Three Dog Bakery to let them know the good news - that I will be able to pay their mortgage with the amount of specially made, organic treats that I would buy (see doggie timbits).

The bakery is where I go to talk about my puppy nonstop and people will actually listen. Kind of like my blog...only in real life.... As I'm standing there telling them how much better his stomach has gotten, Calvin is in the corner having a massive, runny, poop on their floor. Needless to say, I spent some money so they wouldn't hate my guts.

Calvin is now on doggie pepto bismol for a week and a new brand of food - if you can even call it that - for two months. The stuff is basically every tasty ingredient broken down to the enzymes. What does that mean? I think it's all the nutrients stripped of taste and eating pleasure: Low molecular weight Hydrolyzed protein. Crunchy, nutritious, $50 per bag, air.

If he gets better on this food, it means that it's a food allergy and not something wrong with his insides. That would be best. Then we work our way backwards by trying to figure out what he can and can't handle in his belly. Until then, we keep our fingers crossed and hope he doesn't hate us like a kid sent to fat camp.

Here's the kid wrestling with his brother and being put to shame obedience-wise.

Oh, puppy. It's sad that he's having tummy issues -- those are definitely no fun, in humans OR dogs.

I hope everything works out for the best, especially since that food costs so much. And especially since he's adorable!

Gah! Your puppy is so cute. It's a good thing he's so cute, what with all the random pooping and whatnot.

My puppy is adorable - that's why she gets away with chewing Every. F-ing. Thing. in my house.

Oh my gosh! I kind of died right now! Two Calvins! I wish I had two Edies!

That totally made my day. Seriously.

I need to get video of my pup up so everyone can see her crazy ass in action, but edit out the sound because I have the worst voice ever haha

They are very cute playing together. It's great that you are friends with his brother's mom. I hope you get his digestive troubles worked out. It's been a long struggle.

Jamie, how can someone have the worst voice ever? I'm pretty sure my ears would have bled if that were true. Moving right along...

ADORABLE dogs. I hope Calvin's tummy gets better. Seriously, if you ever need someone to dog sit in Chicago, I'm your gal!

Stylish: For sure hoping that the food is temporary, although $50 is better than running diagnostics or having to fix something on the inside...

Hillary: Cal isn't a chewer, which is nice. He prefers to organize things. Any sock, shoe, or similar item is constantly dragged to his cave...I mean pillow. Better or worse? Who knows.

Jamie: I do NOT wish that I had two Calvins. Having one within arm's reach is plenty for me. I love Tofu but I just don't have the energy...or space.

RM: That's what happens when you convince people over dinner that picking up pooches on the same day is the best idea in life. And it was. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

Jenn: Thanks for the offer, I'll keep you in mind when I start jetsetting!

Aww...poor puppy! =[ I hope this tummy troubles get better soon.

My pup had some mysterious coughing problems about a month after I bought him. I took him the vet and was told he has a collapsed trachea. Poor thing, plays hard and coughs and wheezes just as hard, doesn't stop him though.

yup, my puppy was on allergy food for a bit too. basically, it breaks down all the particles so the body doesn't recognize anything. there are other allergy foods out there, though, so if find out it is the food bothering his poor little tummy, you can probably get a different, more puppy preffered kind ( I know they have things like Duck and Rice, Venice and rice, basically things that you wouldn't be able to pick up at your local grocery store...it's an IVD brand)

When I worked at my old vet's office, I had to learn all about food so I could teach everyone else about it, so if you ever need any suggestions, let me know!

Such a cutie!

Sometimes I wish I was a puppy so someone would dole out my food to decide which item it is that gives me the occasional tummy trouble. But the idea of eating something on an enzyme level is not yummy.

I hope this works for the pup!

man, I hope the pup turns out okay.

also, glad to hear that you've bested the bed-wetting demons of your youth.

I'm not sure if that last sentence was sarcastic or not.

It probably was.

Kiera: Sick puppies make me die on the inside. I'm glad your little one is doing fine!

Christie: Thanks! I'll definitely check in with you when we know what our next steps will be. For now, just keep your fingers crossed.

Noelle: It would be like getting all your daily nutrition from little pills. Lame.

Surviving: Thank you for addressing the real issue here. The fact that I am proud of my bathroom successes haha

LOVE IT! I would love and appreciate more puppy blogs, and your place rocks.

I just wrote a post today talking about how I don't really read men's blogs and there you go and prove me wrong. You men like to do that, don't you!
