Not one, but TWO!

Poetry readings, that is, and I've been taking a good razzing from my friends because of them.

While I do enjoy some poetry (contemporary, for the most part), I'm not one to seek it out or enjoy sitting around discussing it. Language, on the other hand, turns me into a total geek. That, I believe, is how a series of unexpected events brought me in front of English professors and students at both Mount Saint Vincent University and Dalhousie University this weekend.

The session at MSVU was pretty small but a few of my former professors were there as well as my entourage of six that I dragged along to make sure I got applause. Technology struggles plagued my entire evening but I guess no one noticed my panic-stricken face when things went awry. The main problem was that I had forgotten to turn the shuffle and clicky-noise functions off of my iPod and the nine recorded vocals were playing way out of sequence and ruining my life. The result?

Click click click click click click shit shit shit click click click click click oh screw it!

Needless to say, I ended up scrapping the second half of the recordings. Sorry to the newf who tried so hard to record without sounding all "Stardate 5792104..."

This morning's session at Dalhousie though was fantastic! I was nervous after yesterday but all the technology worked flawlessly in my favour. Additionally, two of the MSVU ladies were so kind as to show up early to help by reading some additional lines from the audience (thanks Sally and Crystal*!). From my end, it all came across as very slick compared to the first time.

Both sessions gave me the chance to flex my media relations skills during the Q&A sessions and I think I handled myself pretty well despite having to field hardcore English Lit questions. I managed to sound pretty smart and sure of myself at MSVU but I stumbled a bit when a very smart dude asked about the relevance of the different forms of appropriation I had used in my piece. I managed to not look entirely cross-eyed and slack-jawed and quickly moved on.

Very fun experience, met some great, smart and funny people and got to experience a completely different world of presentations. Congrats to all the presenters and good luck to anyone scheduled for tomorrow!

*Crystal performed the week before at MSVU's presentation of The Vagina Monologues. Check out Laurel's review here.

I'm glad it went well on the whole. I'm sure you had no trouble sounding like you knew what you were talking about. I know what it feels like to be in front of large audience when the technical gremilins a attack, and you feel like you're losing it, and sweating and under scrutiny, but it never is as bad as it feels, probably.

I'm glad it went well!

Also, FYI, you have made the blogroll. I'm think a lot of it has to do with Edie's major crush on Calvin and your awesome comments.

Thank you, thank you! I really tempted fate when I decided to use a laptop, ipod, speaker combo. My own fault, I suppose. At least it all came together for the bigger presentation.

Thanks Ms. Lovely, I also have a major crush on Edie and would have the two of you over immediately for martinis and chew-toys if you didn't live so far away.

"were playing WAY out of sequence"

Aghhhhhh!

How about
"chaotically out of sequence";
"disturbingly out of sequence";
"jarringly out of sequence"; or even just plain,
"out of sequence",

but please not "way out of sequence".

Ahhhhhahahahahahahahahaha! I fulfilled my literary moment - I can write whatever I please. Just for that:

the nine recorded vocals were playing REAL out of sequence and ruining my life.
