Because I am inept at winter sports, easily-chilled (thanks to my Smurf-like size), accident prone (combine with the first item) and generally unhappy during the winter months, the newf and I have found comfort in one of Halifax's wonderful gems: Video Difference. This place is one of the few shops in all of Nova Scotia that's open 24/7 and we are better people because of it. It's three floors packed wall to wall with blockbusters, documentaries, indie flicks, and all the classics, organized at times alphabetically but also listed in order of fan and film institute favourites. Movie Mecca. With such a wonderful place at hand, we've been routinely running into town and coming home with six to eight movies. Here's where it gets interesting.
The newf is undeniably a sci-fi geek. You'll notice in the recent vid of Calvin showing off, the theme song for Star Trek Voyager is blaring loudly in the background. I routinely have to refer to him as the Supreme Commander of the Gallactic Space Armada, say, if I want free passage to the kitchen. On the plus side, I've recently been promoted to Brigadier General of the Gallactic Space Army. I don't know what this means...Since bounds to the cash register carrying more spacey, fantasy, sci-fi, 80s cartoon box-sets than he can carry, I'm allowed to rent a few classic, Hollywood glory day movies. Can you believe up until last week I had never seen a Marilyn Monroe movie? Or that up until this morning, I had never watched Breakfast at Tiffany's? Naturally, I watch these by myself to avoid the experience being drowned out by the sounds of his imaginary battles for distant galaxies ("Pew! Pew! Pew pe tew tew pew!").
I'm only onto the third movie on my list but it's growing quickly as more people hear that I'm looking for recommendations. I started with Some Like It Hot, moved on to Breakfast at Tiffany's (that shot of Hepburn lying on the bed in the middle of her trashed room is incredible), and am watching La Dolce Vita later this week. That one has subtitles and therefore earns me double the cultural points. Here are the next ones that have been added on to the list. Any other recommendations, folks?
To Kill a Mockingbird
Rebel Without a Cause
North by Northwest
Rope
Marnie
The Snake Pit
Sunset Boulevard
All About Eve
Casablanca
The Court Jester
The Trouble With Harry
Gaslight
8 1/2
The Graduate
Grey Gardens
Blow-up
Seventh Seal
Annie Hall

In my chat rush I guess I must have wrote Marty but actually I meant Marnie. Oh, and there's a film I haven't seen since high school that I thought was brilliant: The Snake Pit with Olivia de Havilland. Let me know if you run out of recommendations.
Sunset Boulevard, All About Eve and Casablanca are my all-time favorite black and whites. A few years ago my dad gave me a copy of "The 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" and I've been working my way through. Am I a better person yet? I don't know.
Oh my gosh. Some Like It Hot is one of my favorite movies! I second Rebel with out a Cause and All About Eve.
Sweet. Thanks all. I think I've seen every single one of those in my precious Classics section. I need all of these to make up for the copious amounts of street dancing-, ancient civilization battling-, lazer gun firing-movies that the newf and I go see on a far too regular basis.
I'm a philistine and can't abide black and white (except Some Like It Hot. Love it). But The Court Jester is classic-y and definitely one of my favourites. Plus, Danny Kaye! I'd be gay for Danny Kaye. If I wasn't already gay. For girls. You know what I mean.
If you like a dark comedy, "The Trouble With Harry" is really good. (Hitchcock) It was Shirley MacLaine's first movie.
Also "Gaslight" (Ingid Bergman) is a must see. How many do you want? I can list quite a few.
Thanks anyway Ro, maybe I can pick out the good ones for you?
RM: Lay em all on me! I'll get to them, I swear.
- 8 1/2
- The Graduate
- Grey Gardens
- Blow-up
- Seventh Seal
- Annie Hall (and if you've seen that: Hannah and Her Sisters)
I heart movies! That selection is random, but good and with serious "cred".
I haven't seen any of these movies. I fail at life :(
I second Casablanca and The Trouble With Harry (quite the dark comedy but Hitchcock was just a master of his genre)...
Casablanca will blow your mind! Ultimate romance....
This list rocks my world. As do all of you.
I'm currently half-way through La Dolce Vita which is very scandalous yet hard to follow given the mixture of Italian, English and French. Celebrities sleep with each other, are chased by paparazzi, and attempt suicide. Yes, this is an old movie and not just today's Access Hollywood.
I'd recommend 'The Great Escape' and 'Strangers on a Train' if you're looking for older movies.
